What are the Benefits of Olive Oil Soap?
Ever since ancient Greece Olive Oil has been used for its skin care benefits, Homer once compared it to ‘liquid gold,’ which skincare aficionados will understand. We know that Olive Oil is considered to be one of the healthiest vegetable oils available, but it is worth reviewing just what is so great about having this luxurious oil infused in your soap.
1. Moisturises Skin
The antioxidants in the oil, such as Vitamin E, clean your skin without stripping away its natural oils, ensuring you don't end up dry and flaky after using it. It also helps to repair skin damage by soothing and relieving itchy, chapped and cracked skin whilst also helping to rebuild your skin's natural moisture barrier and preventing further moisture loss, as a bonus these same antioxidants will also reduce the damage that can lead to wrinkles and discolouration.
2. Anti Ageing
The major antioxidants contained in Olive Oil help protect the skin from premature skin ageing. Vitamin E is a big part of the anti-ageing benefits of the oil as it restores skin smoothness and protects against UV light. It is also packed with Hydroxytyrosol, which is a big factor in preventing free radical damage to the skin, helping to keep you looking young and is known to help prevent skin cancer.
3. Doesn’t Clog Pores
Unlike some chemical ingredients which can clog pores and encourage existing skin conditions, Olive Oil penetrates deeper into the skin and at the same time provides a cleansing effect which is great for relieving the symptoms of skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. The Hydroxytyrosol also provides anti-inflammatory properties which research shows is good for healing skin abrasions, rashes and sunburn.
3. Enhances Exfoliation
Another of the great benefits for skin is the oil's expertise at exfoliating. Regular use of olive oil, particularly in an exfoliating bar, will remove dead skin cells and leave the epidermis looking renewed and glowing.
4. Olive Oil Soaps use Glycerin
Commercial soaps typically use synthetic cleaners and fragrances which can block your pores and cause irritation. Handmade soaps use Glycerin, a byproduct of the soap-making process, which is highly moisturising and actually absorbs water from the air.
5. Enhances Other Oils
Olive Oil Soaps also have the property of improving the benefits of other skin enhancing oils such as Lemongrass Oil when they are used in conjunction with each other.
